The Formula Mazda Pro Series is characterized as a road to "Indy". Most drivers dream of running the Indianapolis 500, however, getting the experience and sponsorship can be quite difficult. The Formula Mazda program was designed to expedite this process by giving upcoming drivers the opportunity to drive fully configured, open-wheel, formula-style cars with both front and rear aerodynamic wings. The series is thriving on the fact that it is very affordable compared with many other forms of racing, due to the strict specification guidelines.

These race cars are all custom built around the Mazda Rotary Engine which is constructed utilizing rigorous factory racing specifications. The engines are then dyno tested and sealed. The Formula Mazda (FM) is the only spec-formula class in the Sportscar Club of America (SCCA) Road Racing. It is qualified to run with the fastest SCCA classes on a national level effective January 1, 1996.

Within the past five years, Formula Mazda has gained nationwide attention and today there are over 200 FM cars competing on a coast to coast basis. The affordable nature of the cars allows for the sponsor and the team owner to get the most race car for their dollar. The excitement for the program has prompted the Formula Mazda Pro Series to be the fastest growing segment of SCCA Racing in the country.
