6/07/99 - San Clemente, CA | PRO FORMULA MAZDA DRIVER TAYLOR FLETCHER PLACES EIGHTH AT PHOENIX
INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY San Clemente, California - June 6, 1999 Pro Formula Mazda driver Taylor Fletcher, racing with the Bullet Racing Team of San Clemente, placed 8th at in Round 3 of the Pro Formula Mazda Series which was held during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.. The race was held at Phoenix International Raceway one-mile oval known as the "Fastest Road in the West" for its excessive speeds generated from the high-banked turns. Fletcher qualified 14th out of approximately 30 cars. He was quoted as saying, "We are pleased with this result as we finished first among the private teams. There are a number of large, well-funded teams that finished ahead of us. Getting a top ten finish in this highly competitive series for a private team is very significant." On board data acquisition specialist Tom Ambrose said, "Early in the weekend we struggled with trying to balance the car and get the most grip we could without slowing the car down with too many aerodynamic changes. By the time race day came, we had the car pretty well dialed in. We finished a mere 11 seconds off the 1st place finisher. We also got our fastest laps of the weekend during the race." Fletcher battled throughout the race with a number of competitors Some of these were running slightly slower and this impeded the process to the front as well. There was also a number of backmarkers that were a lap down which created some extremely dangerous passing situations - one of which nearly put Fletcher into the Turn 4 wall while bending the front left wing and end fence. The Bullet Racing driver did however recover from this minor collision at speeds in excess of 130 mph to finish in the lead pack. The next event is to be held at Pike's Peak International Raceway, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Pro Formula Mazda cars will run a Saturday race which will be the only support race for the Indy cars which will run on Sunday. The team is looking forward to this event, having qualified on provisional pole and finishing 5th in 1998. Bullet Racing Team driver Taylor Fletcher runs car #27 in the Formula Pro Mazda Series which runs from February through November and includes a 15-race schedule in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada.
